Soccer = Big Business

I can’t comment on the wisdom in stock listing in the US vs. Asia, but two lines that stood s about this article on Man United preparing to list itself on the US stock market:

A study commissioned by the club showed its global fan base had doubled to 659 million people between 2007 and 2012.

659 million people.  There are about 300 million people total in the US.  I don’t know if I see American sports catching up.  The NBA could try, but the NFL or MLB?  I think they are going to become niche sports five decades on.  And then there’s this:

One of the sources said Manchester United had always planned to position itself as a global media business rather than a sports franchise, suggesting that a U.S. listing would make more sense.

I suppose the content is the soccer being played on the field, and the media is how the club makes money off of the soccer.  I just wonder how far Man United will take this- are they going to run their own TV station?  Make their own cellphone?  They already run their own internet site.  Would they set up a special social networking site just for Man United fans.  If there are 659 people in that pool, then there is a lot of money to be made.
